RRB Station Master vs RRB NTPC 2026: Are They the Same? Differences

Updated on 28 October 2026
Is Station Master part of NTPC is one of the most common doubts of railway aspirants this season. In 2026 the RRB Station Master recruitment has come as a separate notice, CEN No. 08/2026, while the RRB NTPC graduate-level recruitment is running under CEN No. 06/2026. The two are not the same notification, and both are open for applications at same time.
In this article we have given a side by side table of the two notices, the earlier years in which Station Master was inside NTPC, what is same and what is different, and how the one application rule is written in the Station Master notice. Every point are compared only where both notices are confirmed from official sources.

Is Station Master Part of NTPC in 2026
Not in the 2026 Cycle. The Station Master notification, CEN 08/2026, is a notice for one post. The word NTPC is not used anywhere in its text. The NTPC graduate-level notice of this year is CEN 06/2026, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release of 11 October 2026 lists its four posts: Chief Commercial Cum Ticket Supervisor, Goods Train Manager, Junior Accounts Assistant Cum Typist and Senior Clerk Cum Typist. Station Master is not one of them.
It was a different story in the earlier cycles, when the official documents show Station Master as one of the posts inside the NTPC notices.
Earlier Notice | Station Master Inside NTPC | Detail |
|---|---|---|
CEN 01/2019 | Yes | Level 6 Cat No. 2, with the CBAT held on 30 July 2022 (PIB release of 8 September 2022) |
CEN 05/2024 (Graduate) | Yes | 994 of the 8,113 vacancies, in a notice with five posts |
So the answer for a candidate who asks "is Station Master part of NTPC" depends on the year. Earlier it was, and in 2026 it is a separate notification.

What Is Same in Both Notifications
The following points are common in both, and each of them is confirmed in the notification of Station Master and in the PIB release of NTPC.
Both are graduate-level recruitments of the Railway Recruitment Boards.
Both need a Graduate Degree from a recognised university or its equivalent.
Both apply the age counting date of 1 January 2027.
Both are online only, through rrbapply.gov.in, and the details are on the unified site rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.
Both have a Level 6 post with an initial pay of ₹35,400, which is Station Master in one and Chief Commercial Cum Ticket Supervisor in the other.
Both are selected on merit, with reservation and age relaxation as per the rules, and both have a provision to refund the examination fee.
What Is Different Between the Two
Number of posts: One post against four posts.
Vacancies : 1,265 against 3,548
Lower age limit: The Station Master notice keeps the age limit between 20 to 33 years, and the NTPC notice starts from 18 years.
Exam stages: Station Master has a single stage CBT followed by a CBAT. The NTPC notice has two CBT stages.
Application dates: The NTPC window ends on 6 November 2026, almost three weeks before the Station Master window closes on 25 November 2026.
Syllabus in the notice: The Station Master CBT has Basic Science, Mathematical and Analytical Capability (60 questions), Logical Capability (20) and Mental Reasoning (20), and General Awareness is not listed. The earlier NTPC graduate notice CEN 05/2024 had General Awareness in both CBT stages. The paper pattern of CEN 06/2026 is not confirmed here, so the candidates should check it in that notice.
The detailed pattern of the Station Master exam is in the syllabus and exam pattern article, and the stage wise process is explained in the selection process article.
Number of RRBs and One Application: What the Station Master Notice Says
The Station Master notice gives the vacancies in Annexure-B in 30 rows of RRB and railway zone. Counting the names of the boards in those rows gives 21 different RRBs, and some boards, such as Mumbai, appear with more than one zone. The notice says only one RRB can be chosen and only one online application is to be submitted. If more than one application is made to different RRBs, all the applications are rejected, and the candidate can be debarred from later RRB and RRC examinations. The choice of the RRB is final once made.
The notice also says that a candidate who made an account for any CEN of 2024, 2025 or 2026 should log in with the same account for CEN 08/2026. This only means the login is common. It does not say that the candidate can or cannot apply to another notice.
The one application rule in CEN 08/2026 is written for CEN 08/2026 itself. The notice does not talk about CEN 06/2026 or any NTPC notice, and the PIB release of CEN 06/2026 does not state its own rule on the number of applications. So the candidates should read the rule of each notice separately, and should not assume that an application to one notice counts for the other.
Which Notice Should a Candidate Read
Nothing in the official documents suggest that one notice replaces the other. Each of them has its own eligibility, dates, fee, syllabus and selection stages. A candidate who is interested in both should:
Read the full CEN 08/2026 and the full CEN 06/2026 from the official RRB website, not a summary.
Check the dates, because the NTPC window closes earlier on 6 November 2026.
Check the age limit, the medical standard and the exam pattern of each post separately.
Fill each form only as per that notice, with correct details
