Railway A-2 Medical Standard for Station Master 2026: Vision, Colour Vision

28 October 2026 · 10 min read

Railway A-2 medical standard for RRB Station Master 2026, vision and colour vision requirements

Updated on 28 October 2026

The Station Master post is placed in the A-2 medical standard in CEN No. 08/2026, and the notification gives the vision requirement of this standard in a short table. Many candidates asks about the A2 medical standard, the eyesight requirement and the colour vision test before they fill the form, so the rules are put together in one place here.

In this article we have given what A-2 means in the notification, the vision standards, the rules for LASIK and other eye surgery, the vision certificate and self-declaration formats of the annexures, the stage where the medical examination is held and the points on which the notification is silent. Nothing here is medical advice, and every rule is taken from the official notification.

What A-2 Means in the RRB Station Master Notification

In the notification the medical standard is a code attached to each post. For the Station Master post, Annexure-A (Post Parameters) shows the standard as A2, and the "Details of Vacancies at a Glance" table on the third page shows it as A-2. Both are the same Standard.

The notification does not explain the other grades (A-1, A-3, B or C) and it does not describe how the grades are made. It only says that the medical standards given for the post are "indicative and not exhaustive" and that they apply to candidates in general. The board asks the candidates to go through Chapter 5 of the IRMM (Indian Railway Medical Manual), Volume I, available on www.indianrailways.gov.in. So the table in the CEN is the minimum picture, and the manual is the longer reference named by the board.

The notification adds that Visual Acuity is one of the important parts of the medical fitness of railway staff, and that the candidates called for Document Verification must pass the Medical Fitness tests held by Railway Administration.

A-2 Vision Standard for Station Master 2026

Test

Requirement in the Notification

General Fitness

Physically fit in all respects

Distant Vision

6/9, 6/9 without glasses (no fogging test)

Near Vision

Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses

Colour Vision

The candidate must pass the test. In the vision certificate it is shown as Ishihara, normal

Binocular Vision

The candidate must pass the test

Night Vision

The candidate must pass the test

Myopic Vision

The candidate must pass the test

The most important words in this standard are "without glasses". The distant and near vision figures is written for the naked eye, and the notice also says that no fogging test is used for the distant vision. For the binocular, night and myopic vision, the notice only names the tests, and it does not give any numbers or scores for them.

Colour Vision

The notification says that the candidate must pass the colour vision test. The only detail given is in the vision certificate (Annexure-VI), where the colour vision column reads "Ishihara" and the result expected is "Normal".

Night Vision

Night vision is listed as a test to be passed. The notification does not tell how the test is done or what level is needed, so nothing more can be said from the notice.

Medical Standard for Ex-Servicemen

The notification says a different medical standard applies to Ex-Servicemen. It points to Para 534 of the IRMM, Volume I, for this. The parameters for the vision certificate of an Ex-Serviceman are given in Annexure VI A, and they are shown below :

Vision Parameter (Annexure VI A, A-2)

As Given in the Proforma

Distant Vision

6/12, 6/18 or 6/9, 6/18 with or without glasses

Naked Eye Vision

Not less than 6/60

Power of Lens

Should not exceed 6D

Near Vision

With or without glasses, the candidate should be able to read normal print, and Sn 0.6 where reading or close work is part of the duty

Colour Vision

Ishihara, normal

Ex-Servicemen candidate should use Annexure VI A format and not the general one. The same annexure also repeats the LASIK note given below.

LASIK and Other Eye Surgery Rule

The notification is direct on this point. Anyone who has got the eyes operated, by LASIK or by some other surgery meant to fix a refractive error, cannot be considered for the Station Master post. The same line is printed under the vision certificate formats (Annexure VI and VI A), where it is said that such candidates are not eligible for a post with medical standard A-2.

For this, a self-declaration in the Annexure VI-B format has to be produced when the documents are verified. The candidate writes that no LASIK or other corrective eye operation has been done, and accepts that a wrong statement means instant disqualification and a bar from every recruitment in the Railways.

Annexure VI C (For Information Only)

Annexure-VI C is marked "for candidates information only". It reproduces a Railway Board letter dated 25.08.2022 about the medical fitness of candidates who have had LASIK. In that table, candidates of the medical categories A1, A2 and A3 who have undergone LASIK are shown as "Unfit". The categories B1, B2, C1 and C2 are shown as "Fit" (the B1 and B2 with some conditions). Since Station Master is in A-2 the "Unfit" line is the one that applies to this post.

Vision Certificate for CBAT (Annexure VI and VI A)

The Vision Certificate is a proforma that an Eye Specialist has to fill and sign. It confirms that the candidate's acuity of vision and colour vision were tested against the standard needed for appointment on the Railways, and that the candidate fully conforms to it.

The notification says the original Vision Certificate must be carried when the shortlisted candidate comes for the CBAT, and a candidate without it will not be permitted to sit in the test. In the CBAT paragraph the notice says "BAT" at one place, and the context makes clear that it means the CBAT.

The notification does not say how old the certificate can be, other than the photograph on it being not more than one month old. It also does not name any hospital or doctor grade, except that the proforma has to come from an eye specialist.

Self-Declaration Format (Annexure VI-B)

Annexure VI-B is the self-declaration about LASIK and other corrective eye surgery. It carries the candidate's name, the parent's name, the place of residence, the place and date, the signature and the RRB registration number. It is to be produced at the document verification, as per the medical standards paragraph of the CEN.

When Is the Medical Examination Held?

The recruitment process has four stages, the CBT, the CBAT, Document Verification and the Medical Examination, in that order. The steps related to the medical are as follows.

  1. Vision certificate (Annexure VI or VI A) is carried on the day of the CBAT

  2. Candidates are shortlisted for Document Verification and Medical Examination RRB wise, at 1:1 of the vacancies, based on the combined merit of CBT (70%) and CBAT (30%)

  3. At Document Verification the self-declaration (Annexure VI-B) is produced

  4. The candidates called for document verification have to pass the medical fitness tests held by the Railway Administration

  5. The appointment of the selected candidates is subject to passing this medical examination, final verification of certificates and verification of antecedents

The dates, venue and the exact procedure of the medical are not given in the notification. The board says the schedule and the place for every stage, and for any other activity, will be decided by the RRBs, who will inform the eligible candidates later. For the other stages, read our article on the RRB Station Master selection process 2026.

The signature of the candidate is also matched at every stage, including the Medical Examination, with the signature given in the application. So the candidate should sign in the same way everywhere, before going for the first stage.

What Happens If a Candidate Is Medically Unfit

  • A candidate who fails to meet the medical standard of the post will not be considered fit for empanelment, and no alternate appointment will be given

  • The notification repeats this in the instructions part also, that a candidate found medically unsuitable for the opted post at the medical before appointment will not get another post

  • If the standard is not met in the initial medical examination, the candidate may be given one last and final chance to file a medical appeal, on payment of the prescribed charges and with the laid down conditions

  • The outcome of the appeal medical is final and binding. The candidates who do not use the appeal option in the allowed time are judged on the first medical result only

The amount of the appeal charges, the time allowed and the other conditions is not stated in the notification.

Glasses, Lenses and Surgery: What the Notification Says

  • The A-2 table gives distant and near vision "without glasses". For the general candidates there is no figure given with glasses

  • For the Ex-Servicemen, Annexure VI A allows vision "with or without glasses" within the figures given there, and a lens power of not more than 6D

  • LASIK and any other surgery done to correct a refractive error make the candidate ineligible, as explained above

  • The notification does not mention contact lenses anywhere

What Is Not Stated in the Notification

Since this article uses the notification only, the following points are left open because the notice does not cover them.

  • Height, weight, chest, hearing or any other physical measurement for the post

  • The scores or levels for night vision, binocular vision and myopic vision tests

  • The fee, date, place or the hospital of the medical examination

  • The details of the other medical grades (A-1, A-3, B and C)

  • The amount and time limit of the medical appeal

  • Any relaxation for the general candidates in the vision figures

Candidates, who want the full medical rules, should read the manual named by the board, and also confirm from the official RRB website for the e-call letter instructions of each stage.

The Annexure-A (Post Parameters) also shows the PwBD suitability columns (VI, HI, LD, OD and MD) as "No" for the Station Master post.
