RRB Station Master Selection Process 2026 Overview

First the candidates sit in one computer based test, and the best scorers of each RRB are called for the aptitude test. Those who qualify in the aptitude test are ranked on the combined marks. The top candidates, as many as the vacancy of that RRB, go for document check and medical. After that the RRB prepares the panel, and the railway administration gives the appointment.

Where the CBT is held in many sessions for the same syllabus, shortlisting at each stage uses normalised marks. The exact formula of normalisation is not given in the notice.

RRB Station Master CBAT 2026

CBAT stands for Computer Based Aptitude Test. It comes after the CBT, and only the shortlisted candidates are called. Here are the rules given in the notification :

  • The questions and the answer options appear in English and Hindi only

  • Candidate must secure a minimum T-score of 42 in every test battery

  • This minimum is the same for all categories, and no relaxation is allowed

  • A candidate has to qualify in all the batteries to be considered for Station Master

  • The CBAT have no negative marking

  • The original vision certificate (Annexure VI, or VI A for Ex-Servicemen) has to be brought on the day of the test, with a recent photo pasted (not older than one month), otherwise the candidate cannot appear

The notice does not tell the names or the number of the test batteries, nor does it explain how a T-score is calculated. It sends candidates to the Psychology section (Candidate's Corner) on the RDSO website for the information on CBAT.

How the Final Merit Is Prepared

The merit list is drawn only from the candidates who have qualified in the CBAT. The notice gives 70% weightage to the marks of the CBT and 30% weightage to the marks of the CBAT. How the raw marks are scaled before the weights are applied is not explained in the notice.

Document Verification (DV)

Only the candidates who clear all earlier stages are verified. At DV the board compares the online form with the original papers. Any mismatch, or a missing eligibility condition, ends the candidature.

  • Bring all originals and two sets of self-attested photocopies

  • Upload the true colour scans of photo and signature on the DV portal before the date

  • Certificates must be in the prescribed formats and in English or Hindi. Others need a self-attested translation

  • Caste, EWS, EBC, minority and Ex-Servicemen papers are checked in the annexure formats

  • A candidate who is absent is cancelled and no extra time is given to bring the originals

  • Employed candidates must show the NOC of the employer

The signature should look the same at the CBT, CBAT, DV, medical and at appointment. The list of papers is explained in the apply online guide.

Medical Examination

The medical is held by the Railway Administration for the candidates called at DV, and the standard for Station Master is A-2. The candidates who had Lasik or another surgery for refractive error is not eligible. If the candidate fails, no alternate appointment is given. One last medical appeal can be made on payment of the charges, and the appeal result is final. Read the A-2 medical standard article before the day.

Empanelment, Training and Appointment

When all stages are over, the RRB gives the railway zone according to the choice of the candidate, depending on merit, medical standard and vacancies. After empanelment in one zone, the candidate cannot ask for the next preferred zone. The RRB can also give a zone which the candidate did not choose, if the administration needs it. If the panel falls short, candidates lower in the merit list can be used.

The RRB only recommends the names. The appointment letter comes from the Zonal Railway, after the medical, the final check of the educational and community papers and the verification of antecedents. Selection does not give a right to appointment. Selected candidates go through training and only stipend is paid in that period. For the pay after training, see the salary article.

Language of the Paper

The CBT paper can be taken in English, Hindi or any of 13 regional languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The language is chosen in the application form and it cannot be changed later. The paper is shown in the chosen language along with English. The reading comprehension passages are given in English language. The CBAT is in English and Hindi only.

On the Exam Day

  • E-call letters are downloaded from the RRB website, about 4 days before the test, and the city is told about 10 days earlier

  • Carry the e-call letter, an original Photo ID and a colour passport photo which is not older than two months

  • The self-declaration paragraph is written at the centre only, and signed with the left thumb impression, in front of the invigilator

  • Phones, watches, calculators, pens and similar items are banned. The pen is given at the centre

  • Biometrics are taken at each stage, and request for change of city, date or shift is not accepted
