The Station Master job profile are the question that comes to every candidate who see the CEN 08/2026 notification. A Station Master is the railway officer on duty who is responsible for the working of trains and traffic at a station, and the post is in Level 6 of the 7th CPC. The post is open to Graduates only.

In this article we have given the duties of a Station Master as per the General Rules of Indian Railways, the pay level, uniform, posting and transfer rules from the notification, and the step by step way to become a Station Master through RRB. We have left out the thing which could not be confirmed from official source, and a note says so each time.

What Is a Station Master? Which Grade Is the Post?

The General Rules for Indian Railways define the Station Master as the person on duty who is for the time being responsible for the working of traffic within the station limits. A person who is in independent charge of signals and of train working under the system in force is also covered by the term. The same rules call a station any place on the line where traffic is dealt with or where authority to proceed is given.

As per CEN 08/2026 the post is in Level 6 of the 7th CPC, and para 8.2 calls it a "Graduate level post". The notification does not use the words Group B or Group C for it, hence we have not written any group for the post The pay details are explained in our RRB Station Master salary article.

Station Master Duties as per General Rules

The duties below are taken from the General Rules (1976) of Indian Railways and the Subsidiary Rules of the Southern Railway (reprint of 2018, with correction memos up to 26 February 2023), as published on an official Indian Railways site. The Subsidiary Rules are made by each zone, so the wording can be a little different on another railway, and the rules are amended from time to time. Duties also changes with the class of the station and its Station Working Rules.

Staff supervision	The Station Master is responsible for the efficient working of all staff at the station and within the station limits, and they work under his authority (GR 5.01)
Safety of the station	Signals, points, level crossing gates and all the machinery should be in working order, and defects are reported at once to the proper authority (GR 5.01)
Following the rules	The working of the station must be as per the rules and regulations in force (GR 5.01)
Line Clear	Nobody except the Station Master can ask for or give Line Clear or authority to proceed (GR 5.01)
Authority to proceed	It is not handed to the Loco Pilot till the points are correctly set and the facing points are locked (SR 5.01)
Keys and locks	Signal levers, points and similar equipment are secured with authorised locks and keys, and a missing or unauthorised key is reported to the Divisional Railway Manager (SR 5.01)
Change of duty	The outgoing and incoming Station Masters check the points, signals and stabled vehicles together, and record it in the Station Diary (SR 5.01)
Passengers	The name of the station is called out when a passenger train arrives, and the Station Master has to be careful about it at night (SR 5.01); fare lists and notices should be displayed (GR 5.02)
Rule books and notices	The staff must have their copies of the rules, and the working time table and other notices are distributed or exhibited (GR 5.02)
Records	Books and returns are written regularly and kept neat, and orders are conveyed to the staff (GR 5.03)
Signal cabins	The Station Master visits the signal cabins often and checks that the staff there do their work properly (GR 5.04)
Discipline	Any neglect of duty by a staff under him is reported to the superior without delay (GR 5.05)
Station Working Rules	Every station has its own working rules, and a copy is kept at cabins and level crossings (GR 5.06)
Shunting	The Station Master authorises some shunting moves on the prescribed form (SR 5.13)
Bad weather	On a storm warning the Station Master, after talking to the Guard and Loco Pilot, can detain trains and refuse Line Clear till the storm is over (SR 2.11)

Train Working and Communication With Control

The Line Clear between two block stations is obtained through block instruments, track circuits, axle counters or electrical communication instruments (GR 14.01). The Subsidiary Rule gives an order of preference of the means, starting from block instruments and going down to the control telephone and VHF sets. When Line Clear is taken on telephone, the two Station Masters cross check the private numbers of the earlier trains to confirm each other. At bridges where an anemometer is fitted, the rule for high wind says that the Station Master informs the Section Controller and the Station Master on the other side at once (SR 2.11).

What a Normal Shift Looks Like

The rulebook does not give a clock timetable of the day, hence we have not made one. From the rules above, a shift is a cycle of these jobs : taking over and checking the station, receiving and despatching trains with the Line Clear exchange, keeping the Station Diary and the registers, watching the staff of cabins and platforms, and informing the control and the officers about any defect. The exact work depends upon size of the station and number of trains.

Duty Hours and Rest for a Station Master

CEN 08/2026 does not mention duty hours, shifts or weekly rest. The working hours of railway servants are governed by the rules made under the Railways Act, 1989, and the Railway Servants (Hours of Work and Period of Rest) Rules, 2005 is the one to read. We could not open the text of these rules on an official site on 28 October 2026 so we have not written the hours or the rest period of a Station Master. Candidates should read the rules after the appointment because the duty roster also depends on the station.

Station Master Uniform and Dress Allowance

The Department of Expenditure Office Memorandum dated 2 August 2017 lists the Station Masters of Indian Railways in a category that gets a dress allowance of Rs. 10,000 per annum. The amount is credited once a year in July and it covers only the basic Uniform. As per the same order, the staff who got uniforms earlier are not provided with uniforms separately after the allowance is given.

The order also says that the rate goes up by 25% each time DA rises by 50%. We could not open a Railway Board order for the current rate of railway staff, and the colour and the pattern of the Station Master uniform is not given in the notification. So we are not giving those details here.

Station Master Promotion and Career Growth

CEN 08/2026 is only a recruitment notification, and it has no promotion chart. We also could not open a Railway Board order or the recruitment rules that give the posts above Station Master with their pay levels. A promotion chart written without that would be a guess, so this article do not give one.

Two things are confirmed The post starts in Level 6, and the pay grows by the 3% annual increment in the pay matrix (the figures are in the salary article). Para 4.16 of the notification also says that selection by RRB does not give a right of appointment, because the appointment letter is issued by the Zonal Railway.

Perks and Facilities

The notification does not list the railway pass, medical facility or quarters for the selected Station Master. We have no official order in hand for them, so they are not described here. One thing that the candidates often mix up is the free Sleeper Class railway pass in the notification: it is for SC/ST candidates only, and it is for travelling to the CBT, CBAT and DV, and not a facility of the job (para 4.22).

Posting and Transfer Rules for Station Master

These rules are from the notification itself so they are confirmed.

Zone allotment	The RRB allots the zone as per option, merit, medical standard and vacancy, but it can give a zone which was not chosen if needed in administrative interest (para 4.15)
First posting	A railway servant is ordinarily employed on the same Railway to which he is first posted, and he cannot claim transfer as a right (para 4.19)
Transfer in need of service	The Competent Authority can transfer him to another department, Railway or project, in or out of India (para 4.20)
Transfer request	A new employee cannot get a transfer to another Railway registered in the first 5 to 10 years of his service (para 4.20)
Territorial Army	Those who are finally appointed may be called for active service with the Railway Engineers' Unit of the Territorial Army (para 4.21)
Bond	Surety or indemnity bond has to be given at the time of joining where needed (para 4.18)

How to Become a Station Master - Step by Step

6	Medical Examination	A-2 standard, no alternate appointment if found unfit
7	Empanelment and appointment letter	RRB recommends, the Zonal Railway issues the offer
8	Training and joining	Training as prescribed, with only stipend during the period

The CBT have three sections, the biggest one being Basic Science, Mathematical and Analytical Capability with 60 questions, then Logical Capability and Mental Reasoning with 20 questions each. Myths About the Station Master Post

Station Master Job Profile 2026 FAQs

Ques: What is the Station Master job profile? Ans: A Station Master is responsible for the working of traffic within the station limits. As per the General Rules, he supervises the staff, keeps the signals and points in order, gives Line Clear and authority to proceed, and keeps the records of the station.

Ques: Which grade is the Station Master post? Ans: The post is in Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission with the initial pay of ₹35,400. The notification calls it a graduate level post and does not name a group for it.

Ques: Can a 12th pass candidate become a Station Master? Ans: Not through this notification. A graduate degree is required, and the final year students are also not eligible, the CBT has 100 questions in all.

Ques: Can the Station Master choose his place of posting? Ans: The candidate chooses the RRB and zone but the RRB can allot a zone which is not chosen, and a transfer request to another Railway is not registered for 5 to 10 years.

Ques: Is there any benefit like a railway pass for Station Master? Ans: The notification does not list it. The free pass in the notification is only for SC/ST candidates for appearing in the exam stages.
