When making tea, a milk : water ratio of 2 : 1 means 1 cup of water for every 2 cups of milk — whether you make 6 cups or 600. A ratio compares two like quantities: how many times one is of the other. The ratio is also written as the fraction ; is the antecedent and the consequent. Both quantities must be in the same unit — ₹100 and 500 apples have no ratio.

Proportion means two ratios are equal: i.e. . Every question here needs two tools: the one-part value and cross-multiplication ().
