8 Part5 worked examples91 practice questions

How much water a tank holds is its volume (or capacity). How much paint it needs is its surface area. So volume is the space inside a solid (cu cm, cu m) and surface area is the total area of its outside (sq cm, sq m). In this chapter we learn both for the cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere, prism and pyramid.

The four most important volume formulas

One thing to remember: the power of the unit. Length has one power (cm), area two (sq cm), volume three (cu cm). So keep every measure in the same unit — and .

Diagonal
  • The diagonal joins opposite corners of the whole solid, not of one face — it is the longest rod that fits in a room.
  • If the areas of three adjacent faces are given, their product is , so the volume is its square root.
  • If a ratio is given, take edges and find from the given quantity.

Cutting, melting and painted cubes

The volume stays the same

Cutting small cubes from a big solid, melting several cubes into one, and counting painted cubes.

  • Cutting: cubes in each direction — multiply the three counts.
  • Melting: the volume does not change. Three cubes into one: .
  • Painted cube ( small cubes per edge): three faces painted — (corners); two faces — ; one face — ; none — .

Check: the four counts must add up to — try : ✓.

Example 5 · Standard

Solution, step by step
  1. 1There are cubes along each edge.
  2. 2Exactly one face painted
