Boats and Streams

Competitive Mathematics · Time, Work and Distance

6 Part3 worked examples33 practice questions

You can swim at 4 km/h in a still pond. Now you are in a river flowing at 1 km/h. Swim with the flow and the river pushes you: your real speed is km/h. Swim against it and the river holds you back: km/h. That is the whole secret of the chapter: the still-water speed and the stream speed make two speeds, and the rest is plain speed-time-distance.

The four basics
1

The two speeds and travel times

With = add, against = subtract

Downstream and upstream speeds, the still-water and stream speeds from them, and the time.

Terms and direct calculation

Still water, stream, downstream, upstream

The speed of a boat always means its still-water speed unless told otherwise.

  • Still water: water with no flow (stream speed zero). Stream: flowing water, speed .
  • Downstream: speed . Upstream: speed .
  • Conversely: still-water speed and stream .
  • Time — divide by going with the stream and by going against it.
  • Check: the stream cannot be faster than the boat, so and .
Example 1 · Basic
A man rows downstream at 14 km/h and upstream at 8 km/h. Find his still-water speed and the stream speed.
Solution, step by step
  1. 1 km/h.
  2. 2 km/h (check: , ✓)
Answer 11 and 3 km/h
Example 2 · Basic
A boat with a still-water speed of 15 km/h goes 104 km against a 2 km/h stream. How long does it take?
Solution, step by step
  1. 1Upstream speed km/h.
  2. 2Time hours
Answer 8 hours
Example 3 · Standard
A boat goes 72 km downstream in 6 hours and the same distance upstream in 9 hours. Find its still-water speed and the stream speed.
Solution, step by step
  1. 1Downstream ; upstream km/h.
  2. 2, km/h

Ratios of times and speeds

Same distance ⟹ speed inverse to time

When a “how many times as long” or a time ratio is given, you get the ratio of downstream to upstream speeds.

times as long, and ratios

Take the two speeds as and from the ratio; their sum and difference give and .

Total time to go and return, its average speed, and two unknowns from two situations.

Going and returning

Going uses one speed and returning the other; add the two times.
