Area and Perimeter — Extra Practice

9 Part21 worked examples466 practice questions
NoteThis is the Extra Practice set: lots of questions. To learn the methods first, read the main chapter of the same topic (the one without “Extra Practice” in its name), then practise here.

To tile your room’s floor you need the space (area); to put a border along the wall you need the edge (perimeter). Perimeter = the length all round (cm, m); area = the space inside (sq cm, sq m). In this chapter we learn to find both for every figure — and then see how they change when sides change or a path is built.

Paths, costs and inscribed figures

Everyday questions

A path round a field, roads, tiles, carpet, fencing and a figure drawn inside another.

Paths and costs

Outer inner

The path’s area is the difference between the outer and inner figures; cost area rate.

  • A path wide all round — outside: ; inside: .
  • Two roads through the middle (one along each side), each wide: — the crossing square only once.
  • Carpet: carpet length ; cost = length × rate.
  • Tiles: room area area of one tile (same units). 1 hectare sq m.

One figure inside another

Equal perimeter, largest inscribed figure

The largest circle in a rectangle, a square in a circle, a triangle in a semicircle; corner quadrants.

  • Largest circle in a rectangle: diameter the shorter side.
  • A square inscribed in a circle: the square’s diagonal the circle’s diameter; area .
  • Largest triangle in a semicircle: base , height , area .
  • Equal perimeters: the square’s perimeter = the circle’s circumference; that gives the circle’s radius.
  • Four corner quadrants make up one full circle.

Traps and fast tricks

Slips · tricks

Where marks go in area and perimeter questions.

The commonest mistakes

Seven traps

The slips that cost marks.

Trap 1Mixing the units of perimeter and area. Perimeter is in cm or m, area in sq cm or sq m. If tiles are in cm and the room in m, make the units alike first.
Trap 2Forgetting the diameter in a semicircle’s perimeter. It is , not just .
Trap 3Using the slanting side as the height of a trapezium. The height is the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides.
Trap 4Taking a diagonal of a rhombus as its side. Use Pythagoras on the half-diagonals to get the side.
Trap 5Swapping the inside and outside formulas for a path. Outside is , inside — a path all round takes the width twice on each dimension.
Trap 6Adding percent changes directly. If length rises 20% and breadth 10%, the area rises 32%, not 30%.
Trap 7Use when the radius is a multiple of 7. Otherwise use the value the question gives.

Fast tricks

Recognise and apply

Habits for speed.

  • Learn the Pythagorean triples: — they save the square roots.
  • For the same perimeter: rectangle square circle in area; the circle encloses the most.
  • For a square: and ; diagonal .
  • If the sides become times, the perimeter becomes times but the area times.
  • Any regular polygon = equal triangles meeting at the centre.
