NoteThis is the Extra Practice set: lots of questions. To learn the methods first, read the main chapter of the same topic (the one without “Extra Practice” in its name), then practise here.
Think of the water tank on your roof. A tap fills it in 6 hours, while a small leak at the bottom would empty it in 12. If both run together, will the tank fill, and when? That is the whole chapter. It is the same as work-and-time, except the work is filling or emptying a tank. An inletadds a part of the tank and an outlet (or a leak)removes a part. When they run together, the net rate is simply the sum of what they add minus what they remove each hour.

The basic rule1
Inlets, outlets and parts
How much in one hour
A pipe’s one-hour part, the whole time from a part, and a pipe’s diameter.
Part and time
n1 and its reciprocal
A pipe that fills in n hours fills n1 of the tank in one hour.
Inlet: fills an empty tank. Outlet: empties a full one. Both work on time1 — only the sign differs: filling +, emptying −.
A pipe that fills qp in one hour fills the whole tank in pq hours. The reciprocal of the part is the time.
For a fraction qp of the tank the time is qp× (time for the whole).
Effect of diameter: the flow is proportional to the area of the opening, and area ∝d2. Double the diameter ⟹ four times the flow ⟹ a quarter of the time.
Example 1 · Basic
An inlet fills 91 of a tank in one hour. How long will it take to fill the whole empty tank?
Solution, step by step
1The reciprocal of the part is the time.
2Time =9 hours
Answer9 hours
Example 2 · Standard
An outlet empties a full tank in 10 hours. In how many hours will it empty 53 of the tank?
Solution, step by step
1For 53 of the tank the time is 53×10.
2=6 hours

Opening together: the net rate
Add and subtract
Time to fill or empty the tank when two or three pipes run together.
Two pipes
Both fill, or one fills and one empties
Two inlets: add the rates. One inlet, one outlet: subtract.
∑ Formula
दोनोंभरें:m+nmn,एकभरे, एकखालीकरे:∣m−n∣mn
Two pipes of m and n hours
Write each pipe’s rate: +time1 for an inlet, −time1 for an outlet.
Add them — this is the net rate. If positive the tank fills; if negative it empties.
The reciprocal of the net rate (ignoring the sign) is the time.
Check: when the outlet is faster (n<m), the tank never fills — it empties.
Example 3 · Basic
Pipes A and B can fill an empty tank in 15 and 10 hours. How long will they take together?
Solution, step by step

Three pipes
Three rates in one line
Two inlets and an outlet, or three inlets.
Three pipes use the same method — add the three rates with a minus sign for the outlet. The fastest way is to take the LCM of all the times and write each pipe’s rate as “units per hour”.

Leaks and the hidden pipe
The unknown rate from a difference
The leak’s time, the third pipe’s time, t=ab and “how much faster”.
Leaks
The gap between two rates
The leak’s rate from the filling time with and without the leak.
∑ Formula
रिसावकासमय=n−mmn
Tap fills in m, with the leak in n (n>m)
A leak is just an outlet whose time is unknown. The tap’s rate m1 minus the leak’s rate leaves the combined n1, so the leak’s rate =m1−n1. Its reciprocal is the time the leak alone takes to empty a full tank.
Example 6 · Standard
A tap fills a tank in 12 hours, but because of a leak it takes 15. How long would the leak alone take to empty a full tank?
Solution, step by step
1The leak’s rate =121−151=605−4=601.

One pipe unknown
Total rate − known rates
When the total and two pipes are known find the third, plus t=ab and “n times faster” questions.
Third pipe unknown: its rate = total rate − the known rates. If it comes out negative the pipe is an outlet.
Formula t=ab: if two pipes fill together in t and alone take t+a and t+b, then t1=t+a1+t+b1 gives t2=ab.
n times faster and d sooner: time ratio 1:n; make the difference of the parts equal d to get k.

Staged questions
Add the filling of each stage
A pipe closes or opens midway, pipes open in turns or at different times, or only a percent of the tank is to be filled.
Closing or opening midway
Make stages
Add net rate × time stage by stage until the sum reaches 1.
Cut the time into stages (“both open”, “only one open”, “all three open”).
Filling in a stage = that stage’s net rate × its duration.
When the total filling is 1 the tank is full; solve the equation for the unknown.
If the total time is asked, add the durations of all stages.

In turns and at different times
Cycles and the clock
Pipes open for one minute each in turns, or are opened at different hours.
In turns: find the net filling of one cycle (inlets +, outlets −).
Count how many whole cycles bring the tank close to full, then finish the rest with the next inlet — it may not need a full minute.
Opened at different hours: write each pipe’s running duration and add rate × duration.
If a clock time is asked, add the duration to the start time at the end.

Capacity, percents and counts
Litres and the number of pipes
Capacity from a rate in litres, the number of inlets and outlets, and a percent difference in tap capacity.
Capacity in litres
Rate difference = litres per minute
When a pipe’s rate is given in litres, equate the difference in the tank’s rates with it.
∑ Formula
C=c−abac
Empties in a through a hole; with a b L/unit tap it empties in c
A pipe given in litres per minute has a direct rate; the others are in “part of the tank per minute”. To combine them take the capacity as C and write every rate in litres.
Total in terms of C:timeC litres per minute.
p% more capacity: rate ratio 100:(100+p); B alone =T×100+p200+p.
Counting pipes: take x inlets and N−x outlets and equate the total rate.
Example 17 · Standard
A full tank empties through a hole in 12 minutes. With a tap pouring 15 litres per minute also open it empties in 20 minutes. Find the capacity.
Solution, step by step
1Hole’s rate 12C; with the tap the net outflow is 20C.
212C−20C=15 ⟹ 30C=15 ⟹ C=450 litres
Answer450 litres
Example 18 · Advanced
A tank has 8 pipes; each inlet alone fills it in 12 hours and each outlet empties it in 18. With all open the empty tank fills in 9 hours. How many inlets are there?
Solution, step by step
1Inlets x: 12x−188−x=91; multiply by the LCM 36: 3x−2(8−x)=4.
25x=20 ⟹ x=4 inlets (and 4 outlets)
Answer4
Example 19 · Standard
Tap B has 60% more capacity than tap A. Together they fill the tank in 40 minutes. How long does B alone take?
Solution, step by step
1Rate A : B =100:160=5:8 ⟹ B’s share is 138 of the total rate.
2B alone =40×813=65 minutes
Answer65 minutes

Traps and fast tricks
Slips · tricks
Where marks go in pipes-and-cisterns questions.
The commonest mistakes
Six traps
The slips that cost marks.
Trap 1Adding an outlet like an inlet. Put a minus sign on the outlet’s rate.
Trap 2Giving a “time to fill” when the net rate is negative. A negative rate means the tank empties.
Trap 3Saying the leak’s time is “n−m”. The leak’s rate is m1−n1 and its time is the reciprocal, n−mmn.
Trap 4Forgetting the first stage’s filling. In “A, B open for three minutes, then C too” subtract the first three minutes’ filling before moving on.
Trap 5Counting the last turn as a full minute. The last inlet may need only a part of its minute.
Trap 6Mixing units. Do not add hours and minutes together; bring everything into one unit.
Fast tricks
LCM units and checks
Habits for speed.
Take the LCM as the tank’s capacity (litres): each pipe’s litres per hour becomes a whole number.
Two together:m+nmn; one fills, one empties:n−mmn (if the inlet is the faster).
Check: two inlets together take less than either alone; an outlet makes the filling take longer.
Remember t=ab — “so many minutes more” questions finish in one line.
Example 20 · Standard
A tank is filled by taps A, B and C in 10, 15 and 30 hours. Use the LCM method to find the time with all three open.
Solution, step by step
1Capacity =LCM(10,15,30)=30 litres; rates: A 3, B 2, C 1 litres/hour.
2Together =6 litres/hour ⟹ 630=5 hours
Answer5 hours
