You can swim at 4 km/h in a still pond. Now you are in a river flowing at 1 km/h. Swim with the flow and the river pushes you: your real speed is km/h. Swim against it and the river holds you back: km/h. That is the whole secret of the chapter: the still-water speed and the stream speed make two speeds, and the rest is plain speed-time-distance.

The two speeds and travel times

With = add, against = subtract

Downstream and upstream speeds, the still-water and stream speeds from them, and the time.

Terms and direct calculation

Still water, stream, downstream, upstream

The speed of a boat always means its still-water speed unless told otherwise.

  • Still water: water with no flow (stream speed zero). Stream: flowing water, speed .
  • Downstream: speed . Upstream: speed .
  • Conversely: still-water speed and stream .
  • Time — divide by going with the stream and by going against it.
  • Check: the stream cannot be faster than the boat, so and .

Traps and fast tricks

Where marks go in boat-and-stream questions.

The commonest mistakes

Six traps

The slips that cost marks.

Trap 1Subtracting downstream and adding upstream. Downstream the current helps ⟹ ; upstream it opposes ⟹ .
Trap 2Reading “speed of the boat” as the downstream speed. “Speed of the boat” means the still-water speed.
Trap 3Taking the there-and-back average as . It is — less than .
Trap 4Using the time ratio as the speed ratio. For the same distance, speed is inverse to time.
Trap 5Letting the stream exceed the boat. If appears, something went wrong — the upstream speed cannot be negative.
Trap 6Mixing minutes and hours. With speeds in km/h, keep times in hours.

Fast tricks

Sum-difference and ratios

Habits for speed.

  • Given the two speeds, the still-water speed is their mean and the stream is half their difference.
