NoteThis is the Extra Practice set: lots of questions. To learn the methods first, read the main chapter of the same topic (the one without “Extra Practice” in its name), then practise here.
If your school is 3 km from home and you reach it in 30 minutes, what is your speed? 3 km in half an hour — 6 km per hour. That is the whole idea: speed tells how much distance is covered in one unit of time. Double the speed and the same distance takes half the time. Every question in this chapter rests on this “direct and inverse” relation — you only have to keep the units consistent (km and hours, or metres and seconds).

The basic formula1
The formula, units and ratios
Direct and inverse relations
Finding any one of the three, converting units, and speed-time ratios.
The three quantities and units
km/h ↔ m/s
Keep the units consistent; the factor from km/h to m/s is 185.
Speed = distance ÷ time; the units of distance and time must match the speed unit (km + hours ⟹ km/h; m + seconds ⟹ m/s).
km/h to m/s:×185 (1000 m in 3600 s). m/s to km/h:×518.
Divide minutes by 60 to get hours: 20 minutes =31 hour.
Check the size: walking is about 5 km/h, a bicycle 15, a car 60.
Example 1 · Basic
A car covers 240 km in 6 hours. What is its speed?
Solution, step by step
1Speed =6240.
2=40 km/h
Answer40 km/h
Example 2 · Basic
Convert 36 km/h to m/s and 15 m/s to km/h.
Solution, step by step
136×185=10 m/s.
215×518=54 km/h
Answer10 m/s; 54 km/h
Example 3 · Standard
A bike crosses a bridge at 36 km/h in 5 minutes. What is the length of the bridge in metres?
Solution, step by step
136 km/h =10 m/s =600 m/min.
2Length =600×5=3000 m
Answer3000 m

If two vehicles have speeds in the ratio x:y and cover the same distance, their times are in the inverse ratio y:x. This solves “d minutes more” questions: make the difference of the time-ratio parts equal d and find one part.
Example 4 · Standard
The speeds of A and B are in the ratio 2 : 3. A takes 15 minutes more than B to reach the same place. Find the times.
Solution, step by step
1Time ratio A : B =3:2; 3k−2k=15 ⟹ k=15.
2A =45 minutes, B =30 minutes
Answer45 and 30 minutes
Example 5 · Standard

Solution, step by step
1Same distance ⟹ speed × time is constant.
2New speed =24×810=30 km/h
