Problems Based on Trains — Extra Practice

Competitive Mathematics · Time, Work and Distance

7 Part16 worked examples276 practice questions
NoteThis is the Extra Practice set: lots of questions. To learn the methods first, read the main chapter of the same topic (the one without “Extra Practice” in its name), then practise here.

For a car we ignore its length — it is a point. But a 200 m train passing a pole raises a question: when has it passed? When its last coach has cleared the pole. So from the engine reaching the pole to the last coach leaving it, the train has covered its whole length. All train questions come from this one idea: distance covered while passing = length of the train + length of whatever it passes. The rest is plain speed-time-distance.

∑ Formula
The formula for every passing question
1

Pole, platform and bridge

Passing something that stands still

Length for a pole; length + platform for a platform or a bridge.

Pole, man and signal

An object of negligible length

Passing a pole or a standing man covers exactly the train’s length.

  1. See what the train passes — for a pole / standing man / signal the distance is the train’s length .
  2. If the speed is in km/h and lengths in metres, convert the speed to m/s ().
  3. Length speed time; speed length time.
  4. If the speed is asked, convert back to km/h ().

Platforms and bridges

Train + platform

Passing a platform covers ; solving the unknown from two situations.

  • Platform / bridge: distance train platform. From the engine reaching the start to the last coach leaving the end, that is the distance.
  • Pole and bridge both given: the speed is equal, so gives .
  • Two bridges given: the train’s length cancels; speed .
  • A platform as long as the train: total distance .
  • Time for one platform known: get the speed, then the time for another.

Passing each other and passing a man

Through the relative speed

Two trains crossing each other; a train passing a moving man; trains of equal length.

Two trains crossing each other

Add the lengths; add or subtract the speeds

Distance ; relative speed: in opposite directions, in the same direction.

∑ Formula
Two trains, lengths and speeds
  • Imagine sitting in one of them — what is the other’s speed relative to me, and how far must it go to clear me (the two lengths together).
  • Equal lengths, pole times : time to cross each other (opposite) or (same direction).
  • The view of a passenger or driver inside one train: the relative speed is the same ⟹ the lengths are in the ratio of the times.

Passing a moving man

Add or subtract the man’s speed

The man’s length is negligible, so the distance is the train’s length; the speed is relative.

  • Man in the train’s direction: relative speed (the train passes him slowly).
  • Man coming towards the train: relative speed (passed quickly).
  • If the times for two men differ, the train’s length is the same in both — two equations give both the speed and the length.
  • Bring all speeds to one unit (m/s) and use time .

Solution, step by step
  1. 1A : B .
  2. 2B km/h

Mixed questions

Reduced speed, an accident and stoppages

More time when the speed drops, an accident on the way, and minutes lost to stoppages.

Reduced speed, accident, stoppages

Same distance, different speeds

The distance is the same in every case; that gives the equation.

  • Speed reduced by , time changes from to : ⟹ ; distance .
  • After an accident the speed becomes : if the accident site shifts km on, exactly that stretch is now run at normal speed, saving its time.
  • Stoppage minutes: per hour.
Example 14 · Standard
A train covers the distance between two stations in 3 hours. With the speed reduced by 10 km/h it takes 4 hours. Find the distance.
Solution, step by step
  1. 1 ⟹ km/h.

Traps and fast tricks

Slips · tricks

Where marks go in train questions.

The commonest mistakes

Six traps

The slips that cost marks.

Trap 1Forgetting the train’s length when crossing a platform. Distance train platform, not the platform alone.
Trap 2Mixing m/s with km/h. With lengths in metres and speed in km/h, multiply by first.
Trap 3Subtracting speeds in opposite directions (or adding them in the same). Head-on: add; one behind the other: subtract.
Trap 4Doubling or zeroing the distance for a pole or man. Their length is negligible; distance the train’s length.
Trap 5Ignoring the man’s direction. A man coming towards the train raises the relative speed; one walking along lowers it.
Trap 6Not taking square roots for the times after meeting. The ratio is , not .

Fast tricks

and relative speed

Habits for speed.

  • 72 km/h = 20 m/s, 54 = 15, 36 = 10, 90 = 25 — memorise these four; most questions use them.
  • Imagine sitting in the other train — the relative speed and the distance to clear become obvious.
  • Equal lengths: time .
  • Check: a train speed of 30–150 km/h and a length of 100–800 m look right.
Example 16 · Standard
Two trains run in opposite directions at 108 and 72 km/h. The first is 250 m long, the second 200 m. How long do they take to cross each other?
Solution, step by step
  1. 1Relative speed km/h m/s; distance m.
  2. 2Time seconds
