NoteThis is the Extra Practice set: lots of questions. To learn the methods first, read the main chapter of the same topic (the one without “Extra Practice” in its name), then practise here.

How much water a tank holds is its volume (or capacity). How much paint it needs is its surface area. So volume is the space inside a solid (cu cm, cu m) and surface area is the total area of its outside (sq cm, sq m). In this chapter we learn both for the cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere, prism and pyramid.

∑ Formula
The four most important volume formulas

One thing to remember: the power of the unit. Length has one power (cm), area two (sq cm), volume three (cu cm). So keep every measure in the same unit — and .

Diagonal
  • The diagonal joins opposite corners of the whole solid, not of one face — it is the longest rod that fits in a room.
  • If the areas of three adjacent faces are given, their product is , so the volume is its square root.
  • If a ratio is given, take edges and find from the given quantity.

Cutting, melting and painted cubes

The volume stays the same

Cutting small cubes from a big solid, melting several cubes into one, and counting painted cubes.

  • Cutting: cubes in each direction — multiply the three counts.
  • Melting: the volume does not change. Three cubes into one: .
  • Painted cube ( small cubes per edge): three faces painted — (corners); two faces — ; one face — ; none — .

Check: the four counts must add up to — try : ✓.

Changes and ratios

How surface and volume respond to a change in size

Multipliers for percent changes, and ratios of volumes and areas.

Think in multipliers

Turn each size into a multiplier, apply the right power, multiply.

  • Increase → multiplier ; decrease → multiplier .
  • If every size becomes times: lengths times, surface area times, volume times.
  • Cylinder: — square the radius multiplier, take the height multiplier as it is.
  • Cuboid: the volume multiplier = the product of the three multipliers.
  • Keeping the volume fixed: in a cylinder, if grows then falls in proportion to its square.
Example 14 · Standard

Combined solids and everyday questions

Tents, ice-cream cones and carved solids

Solids made by joining two solids or carving one out of another.

Joining and carving

Take each part separately

Volumes add on joining, but the joined faces are no longer on the outside.

  • Add or subtract the volumes; the joined (hidden) face is not counted in the surface.
  • Tent (cylinder + cone): canvas — no floor and no circle at the joint.
  • Ice-cream cone (cone + hemisphere): volume .
  • Largest cone from a cylinder: cone of the cylinder, left . Largest sphere in a cube: diameter the cube’s edge.

Traps and fast tricks

Slips · tricks

Where marks go in volume and surface-area questions.

The commonest mistakes

Seven traps

The slips that cost marks.

Trap 1Using the height in a cone’s surface. The curved surface takes the slant height ; the volume takes the straight height .
Trap 2Taking the diameter as the radius. Check whether the question gives diameter or radius; formulas always use .
Trap 3Not matching the units. If a cylinder is in cm and a tank in m, convert first; .
Trap 4Taking off the thickness only once in a hollow box. The wall is on both sides, so the inner size is less.
Trap 5Writing for a hemisphere’s total surface. A solid hemisphere also has a flat circle on top: .
Trap 6Treating the surface as equal when melting. Melting keeps the volume equal, not the surface area.
Trap 7Adding percents directly. If an edge grows 10%, the volume grows 33.1%, not 30% — cube the multiplier.

Fast tricks

Recognise and apply

Habits for speed.

  • Use when the radius is a multiple of 7; cancel wherever it appears on both sides.
  • Cone : hemisphere : cylinder — with equal radius and the volumes are (they are times ).
  • A sphere’s volume ÷ surface — so .
  • The Pythagorean triples () give the slant height at once.
  • For painted cubes find , then .
